Paul's Musical Scraps
Dreams of Flight

Conceptualized April 2009

Chords:  F, Eb, Db Eb, F C

Riding down the path in the place you know
Whistling your favorite tune as you go
With millions of others close behind

<>

You’ve always wished you could leave your bike
For a vehicle you would rather like
To bring to life dreams of flight inside your mind

<>

That guy whom you wish you were
Is riding right in front of you, you’re sure
You follow him, you adore him, you envy him

<>

But as you ride you see in front of you

The path ahead is broken off due to

To a cliff about to send you to oblivion

<>

But you watch the guy you wish you were [C Db]
Make his bike continue to whirr [C Db]
And keep his speed up riding toward the edge [C Db C7]

You fear that he’s about to fall [F Gb]
You stammer in an effort to call [F Gb]
His name in fear that he will soon be dead [F Gb F7]

You don’t—all you do is stop and stare [Bb B]
As he rides his bike toward open air [Bb B]
You think that he’s about to fall and die [Bb B Bb7]

But his bike begins to levitate [Eb E]
The laws of physics violated [Eb]
As you wonder how he learned to fly [Db Eb F]

<>

<chorus:>

Up is where the leaders go
Soaring into the wild blue

But the thing that we don’t know
Is whether we can, too

But if you don’t know, I’ll tell you now
We all have the ability to fly
We all have within us the pow’r
To ride into the sky <end chorus>

<>

The man you wish you were is in the air
A million people stop and stare
Because this man’s a wonder and a half

A bunch of them walk over and look down
To see oblivion and eventually the ground
But the flying man looks back and starts to laugh

He calls to those behind him saying
You don’t get off the ground by praying
You just have to keep yourself from looking down

If you rule out the belief that you can fall
You will start to fly and that is all
You have to do to get off the ground

<>

You feel struck and start to stammer
Is that really all that matters?
Your mind is in a state of discontent

You wonder how to get your mind
To truly, totally leave behind
The notion that you’ll fall and meet your end

Your mind begins curtailing
Your worries about failing
The flying man sees and nods in your direction

“Your mind’s on the right track,” he says,
“You’re gaining inner confidence
You’re on your way to flight and defying conventions

<chorus again>

Are you ready to be yourself
And answer to nobody else
Are you game to make your dreams come true?

You dust yourself off, grab your bike
And ride into the air just like
The man who soared above in front of you

You made it!  What he said was true!
He says, “I knew you’d do it, too!”
You marvel at how you can really fly

And now that you know, you feel empowered
And forget the days of being a coward
As the two of you ride off into the sky
